How to Prepare the Perfect Shisha: Bowl, Heat & Flavour Tips

Dero Tobacco shisha tobacco ready to prepare

Even the best tobacco needs the right preparation. With a few simple steps you get more flavour, smoother clouds and a longer session. Here is how to prepare a shisha like a professional.

1. Start with a clean hookah

Residue from earlier sessions affects the taste. Rinse the base, downstem and bowl with warm water after every use and clean the hose regularly (or use a washable hose). A clean hookah means pure flavour.

2. Get the water level right

Fill the base with cold water so the downstem sits about 2–3 cm below the water surface. Too much water makes pulling heavy; too little makes the smoke hot and harsh. Some smokers add ice cubes for an extra-cool draw.

3. Prepare and pack the tobacco

  • Fluff it up: gently loosen the tobacco with your fingers or a fork, removing any thick stems.
  • Fluff pack: sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the bowl — do not press it down. This is the most common method for classic bowls.
  • Leave space: keep about 2 mm between the tobacco and the rim so it does not touch the foil or heat device.
  • Phunnel bowls: pack slightly denser around the centre column, but still not tight.

4. Foil or heat management device

Cover the bowl tightly with heavy-duty foil and poke many small, evenly spaced holes. Alternatively, use a heat management device (HMD), which makes heat control easier and protects the tobacco from burning.

5. Choose and light your coals

Natural coconut coals give the cleanest taste. Light them on an electric coal burner or stove until they glow evenly on all sides — usually 8–10 minutes. Avoid quick-light coals: they often leave a chemical taste.

6. Heat management: the secret to great flavour

  • Start with 2–3 coals on the edge of the bowl and let it heat up for 4–6 minutes.
  • Take slow, gentle draws — fast pulling overheats the tobacco.
  • Does it taste harsh or hot? Remove a coal or move the coals to the edge.
  • Weak clouds after a while? Rotate the coals or add a fresh one.
Rule of thumb: harsh = too hot, little smoke = too cold. Adjust the coals, not the tobacco.

7. Safety first

Burning coals produce carbon monoxide (CO), which you cannot see or smell. Always use shisha in a well-ventilated space, never in a closed room or tent, and let the coals cool down completely before disposing of them. Shisha is for adults only.

8. Enjoy the flavour

Now the best part: relax and enjoy. Looking for the perfect tobacco for your next session? Browse the Dero Tobacco catalogue or ask our team for a recommendation.
